Ultrasonography is the process by which ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to produce pictures of the internal organs of the body. Ultrasonography is used to help diagnose the causes of pain, swelling, and infection in the body’s internal organs. Images are also obtained from the baby in pregnant women and the brain and hips in an infant. Ultrasound is safe, noninvasive and does not use ionizing radiation. They are painless and do not require needles, scissors or incisions.
